Han is available for his new forever home.
Han is a beautiful male from Duchess’ and Obi’s first litter. He is just over 1 years old. The original owners surrendered him to rescue stating they didn’t have enough time from him. I brought him home to me. He is a very large dog. The foster family reported he chases cats and chickens. He was noted to use his size to get his way and was treat trained. However, we do not treat train here because Newfoundland’s can grow out of that very quickly, especially ones as smart as my Obi. We utilize the E-collar for training and he has responded very well to that. I’ve had no behavioral issues with Han. He integrated back into the family easily. In the home currently I have two intact males and two intact females and ten 10 week old puppies and there has been no issues. Han seems happy, is less anxious than when he arrived. The rescue had placed him on anxiety meds and I’ve weened him off of those. He appears to be relaxed here. Han is very playful, especially with Ania but really with anyone. Yesterday I did notice when I took out the bag of treats that came with him from rescue, he ran from them. That makes me wonder if there was abuse somewhere along the way. Han just needs a patient person with a softer voice. He response so well and climbs up in my lap for loving just like he did as a pup. He initiates play with all of the adults and kisses the babies, sometimes letting them know when he wants to be left alone, but has shown no aggression in my pack.
So far, he has followed my commands. I have a feeling he was crated quite a bit because I found vet paperwork where the rescue claimed he seemed like he had week muscles in his hind quarters. I have not experienced any of that. He plays, runs, jumps and wrestles just fine. Here the dogs all share a very large indoor dog kennel instead of individual kennels. However, I did place him in an individual kennel the first night and he didn’t prefer it but did get in for me. The second night he let me know he wanted to sleep with the other dogs in the large open kennel in the dining room and did so just fine. He is dog door potty trained and has had no issues in the house.
The vet paperwork expressed concerns about his front legs; however, he is still growing, and his bones have not reached maturity yet. The vet that took the x-rays noted that Han’s x-rays needed to be reviewed by a vet that is very familiar with Newfoundlands because what was being reported didn’t seem to be an issue for him regarding pain or movement and such. I’m wondering if he spent more time in the crate than not and didn’t get enough proper exercise for him to develop. I just don’t know what his first year has been like. Han is almost as tall as Obi but has not completed growing yet. His paws are even larger than his dads.
I would like to see Han go home to a family that can dedicate time to him, be gentle with continued training, and just give him a safe space to grow up and work through the puppy stage. He is way calmer and less mischievous than his dad was at his age. I think he was misunderstood and was not well socialized. I haven’t had the opportunity to walk with him except when I took him to the dog park at the rest stop, I picked him up at. He was frightened but didn’t pull or knock me down. He needs someone experienced. Han is available for a $1000 rehoming fee. He comes with limited registration and intact. Han needs to be neutered at 3 years of age. Ideally not before so he can finish growing. The one year has passed for his health guarantee so there will be no additional guarantee this time around. Han is great with other dogs as long as the owner knows how to introduce them properly and gives them space to get to know each other without human anxiety getting the way.
Han really does remind me of the same pup that sat on the couch with me every night before leaving my home at 8 weeks. He is just a big ole lovable teddy bear. He loves to play with the water when I’m using the hose in the back yard and will stop when given a gentle correction with the ecollar. Han had a bath in the pool just like the other dogs over the weekend and was so calm.
Han is current on vaccinations, and I recently dewormed him. In the picture in the pool, his mom is on his right and Ania is on his left. You can see he is very large. Dad is in the picture below with larger whiter areas. You can see Obi and Han are close to the same size. Obi is a little taller now, but I don’t think that will be the case for long.
